Cities and Creativity: Cultural and Architectural Interpretations of Madrid

Most of the world population lives in urban environments, and this trend is set to continue on the increase in coming decades. What is more, the vast majority of human beings carry out their daily activities of residence, work, education, sport and leisure in built, architectural settings. Architecture and its projection at the macro scale (the city) therefore construct the stage upon which human life is essentially enacted. This course is intended to encourage students to acquire a more in-depth awareness of Architecture and the city, with a focus on recent currents in the progress of both, such as sustainability, environmentalism and the relationship with nature. These topics are underpinned by a discussion of theory and illustrated by a study of the city of Madrid: an example of a hybrid architectural/planning experiential environment that looks to the future with an ambition for modernization.
