Catalog description

This course introduces students to the study of religion by posing three interrelated questions: what is religion; what's at stake in defining it; and what gets to count as one? We will engage some of the classic theories of religion, ask how and why certain traditions get counted as "world religions" while others don't, and explore local sites - from the famous Lantau Island Buddha to Hong Kong Disneyland - to understand the conceptual reach and limits of the category.
