European Security in an Age of Global Rupture

Catalog description

This course explains and interprets the complexities of contemporary European security at a time of global upheaval and reordering. On one hand, it offers an understanding of European security in its widest geopolitical sense, encompassing the member states of the European Union and NATO, the enduring role of the United States, and the centrality of Europe's neighbors in the East and South, including Russia and Eastern Europe, the Balkans and Turkey, North Africa and the Middle East. On the other, it examines security in its widest thematic sense: from traditional issues of military defense to politically existential questions such as democracy and human rights, to newer issues regularly securitized in European public debate, including energy policy, hybrid threats, competitiveness, and migration.
