Politics and Society in Italy and Europe

This course explores the political and social dynamics of contemporary Italy and the European Union. We begin with the historical foundations of the Italian state, examining the evolution of its political institutions, parties, governments, and social movements. Through this lens, we investigate how Italy's national identity has been constructed and contested, and how its political culture reflects broader tensions between tradition and transformation. After deepening our understanding of contemporary Italian politics and key political players, the course shifts focus to the European level, analyzing the development of the European Union (EU) - its institutions, integration processes, and current challenges. We explore how the EU has sought to balance national sovereignty with supranational governance, and how it has responded to successive crises that have tested its legitimacy and cohesion. Special attention will be given to major transnational phenomena that have significantly impacted both Italy and Europe more broadly, including post-2008 austerity measures, the rise of populist movements on both the left and right, migration flows, and the reemergence of war as a geopolitical reality on the continent. To make our study more concrete and engaging, we will complement our readings and discussions with a wide range of audiovisual materials, such as political campaign videos, popular media, and official EU communications. These sources will help us critically analyze how political narratives are constructed and communicated, and how ideas of identity, legitimacy, and crisis are shaped in the public sphere. In-class debates and critical discussions will play a central role throughout the course, encouraging students to actively engage with contested issues and to sharpen their analytical, rhetorical, and collaborative skills.
