Technology is reshaping health systems, climate responses, finance, governance, and education across the world - but who benefits from digital transformation, and who is left out? This interdisciplinary course examines how mobile technologies, artificial intelligence, digital platforms, and public digital infrastructure intersect with inequality, power, and development in the Global South. Grounded in the South African context, students critically compare Silicon Valley innovation models with African development approaches, exploring themes such as digital inequality, platform power, AI ethics, climate justice, and digital governance. The course is discussion-based and accessible to students from all disciplines, with no technical background required. It is particularly suited to students interested in technology, public policy, social justice, global studies, entrepreneurship, design, and the future of AI.
