GEN 12132
Germany between Old and New Normal
Stanford University · UGRD · Fall 2026
1 section
Catalog description
German foreign policy has long operated on a set of assumptions that no longer hold true: cheap energy from Russia, cheap products from China and cheap security from the US. The future of Pax Americana, multilateralism, further European integration, etc. require not only transformation in policies but also new mindsets. Things taken as givens are under duress or have come to an end. How are regional and global crises impacting German political culture and diplomacy today? What could and should be Germany's role in the EU and in a newly formed global order?
