GEN 11465
Groundbreaking Chamber Music Works of the Second Viennese School
Stanford University · UGRD · Fall 2026
Catalog description
This course will examine the creative and distinctive chamber music compositions of Arnold Schoenberg, Alban Berg, and Anton Webern, the primary composers of what became known as the Second Viennese School. We will listen, analyze, discuss historical context, and - if enrollment includes sufficient numbers of instrumentalists - prepare and perform in class portions of such works as Schoenberg's "Pierrot Lunaire" and Second String Quartet, Berg's "Lyric Suite," and Webern's Six Bagatelles. The course will connect to several days of chamber music and chamber orchestra events in late April organized by Stanford live and featuring the Verbier Chamber Orchestra.
