VISITING: Closed to visitors. TYPE OF CLERKSHIP: Selective III. DESCRIPTION: The Community Health of the Underserved Clerkship is part of the Health Equity Education Initiative. The clerkship will provide students with an immersive experience in caring for the medically underserved at a community site such as a Federally Qualified Health Center or a community clinic. Students will explore concepts in health equity and learn clinical skills in working with underserved populations such as patients lacking stable housing, farmworkers, refugees, and Black and/or Latinx patients. Students may also rotate in a variety of specialties as available, including: cardiology, dermatology, orthopedics, palliative care, rheumatology, trauma surgery, and urology. Transportation and housing costs may be provided depending on the selected site. Students may petition to satisfy the selective III requirement with an alternative non-core rotation. Away rotations with a $500 stipend are possible with approval from the registrar and clerkship director through this Away rotation application form. To satisfy the selective III requirement, the rotation needs to carry at least 3 units and include attendance at the required didactic sessions and the 2 reflection sessions and completion of 2 reflection assignments and a final presentation. PREREQUISITES: 3rd and 4th year students. PERIODS AVAILABLE: 1-12, full time for 2 weeks, 3 students for periods 1-3, otherwise 5 students per period.
