VISITING: Open to visitors. TYPE OF CLERKSHIP: Elective. DESCRIPTION: The clerkship provides medical students in-depth exposure to palliative care across the continuum of care including several ambulatory clinics (in person and remote) and inpatient consult service. Students will learn core communications strategies in disclosing difficult news, eliciting and clarifying goals of care, and providing psychosocial support as part of a multidisciplinary team. They will also learn physiology and pharmacology relevant for symptom management (e.g. pain, nausea, depression). Students complete 2 or 4 weeks for elective credit (i.e. 2 weeks inpatient, 2 weeks outpatient, or 4 weeks of either depending on learner spot availability). Available 2-4 weeks rotation are on first come first serve basis alongside all other Stanford learners. FYI, all remote clinic visits will be conducted via the EPIC multi-provider video visit platform. Students are encourage to complete the online Palliative Care Always course in addition to patient visits with their teaching faculty. PREREQUISITES: Med 300A and Surg 300A, and approval by the Clerkship Director is required for all students.
