Catalog description

This elective will introduce second-year medical students to the inner workings of how we provide care in the inpatient hospital setting. Students will attend weekly lectures/discussions on Friday afternoon from 1:30-2:20pm to learn about the ins and outs of inpatient rotation logistics and how the hospital functions. Students will also have a one-day weekend shadowing opportunity (either on Saturday or Sunday morning) with an internal medicine team to better understand the roles of the different team members, the flow of rounds, and the functions of history taking and physical examinations to perform a patient assessment. After the shadowing experiences, students will debrief with rotation directors and share their observations with the class. The elective is designed to enhance preparation for the transition from preclinical courses to clerkships.
