This course examines urgent public health issues in U.S. cities through weekly case studies of real-world crises such as the water contamination in Flint, gun violence in Chicago, and asthma in the Bronx. Each week, students explore the historical, political, and socioeconomic forces behind these issues and participate in guided discussions to consider systemic reforms and community-based solutions. Through short weekly reflections and an immersive final project, students will collaborate in teams to design their own public health interventions for a selected city and issue. Co-sponsored by Stanford School of Medicine faculty, this hands-on course centers on health equity, civic responsibility, and the role of students in advancing community health. Designated a Cardinal Course by the Haas Center for Public Service.
