Catalog description

This discussion group offers a unique opportunity for law journal editors and leaders to engage deeply with emerging legal scholarship. Designed specifically for students making a very significant contribution to a Stanford-sponsored law journal, the course consists of three evening sessions. At each session, a Stanford alum or current fellow who is preparing to go on the law teaching market will present a job-talk paper or a comparable work in progress. Students will provide both written (~1-3 pages) and oral feedback on each draft. The course is designed to strengthen students' capacity to assess and engage fluently with emerging legal scholarship, to support scholars at a pivotal stage in their careers, and to deepen the connections between Stanford's journals and the broader academic community. CONSENT APPLICATION: To apply for this course, students must complete a Consent Application Form available from the SLS Registrar, https://registrar.law.stanford.edu/. Applicants will be required to provide their resumes, describe their journal role, and make a firm estimate of the number of hours they will spend per week during the winter quarter on journal-related activities. In general, to qualify as "a very significant contribution," the student's attested time commitment to the journal must be at least ten hours per week during the winter quarter. Applications will be due by 5:00 p.m. on December 18, 2026. Consent decisions will be made by December 30, 2026. Late applications will not be considered. Elements used in grading: Attendance, class participation, written assignments, oral feedback. Class meets: TBA.
