Latinos and the Law

Catalog description

At 19 percent of the total population, Latinos are currently, in percentage terms, the largest single racial minority group in United States history. As a result, more and more of the law will develop in the future through cases that emanate from and involve members of the Latino community. This course explores how the United States legal system has grappled with the specific concerns and discrimination issues faced by the Latino community. This course will review and critique cases in multiple areas, including Census, consumer protection, education, employment, immigration, jury exclusion, racial classification, and voting rights. This course will explore current issues faced by Latinos in light of contemporary threats to the rule of law. Elements used in grading: Attendance, class participation, short response papers, open book exam.
