State Government and Fundamental Freedoms

Catalog description

When federal officials seek to limit or undercut individuals' federal constitutional rights, state governments have an important role to play in protecting those rights. This course, co-taught by California's Attorney General and a California State Assembly Member, explores the role that state government officials play in protecting fundamental freedoms and expanding safety net services in times of federal retrenchment. Attention will be paid to how both litigation and state legislation function as rights-protective mechanisms. Elements used in grading: Attendance, Class Participation, Written Assignments.
