Catalog description

Looking at the New Testament portrayal of Jesus in its historical and cultural context, this course examines what it means to be a “savior,” giving special attention to the competing claims of early Christ-believers, people devoted to healing and saving gods, and those who participated in the cult of the Roman emperors. In addition to a study of ancient soteriology, the course offers insight into ancient and contemporary understandings of “miracle” and “magic” in the Christian tradition. Prerequisites TH 1301 or SMC 1314 or HO 1305 .
