Catalog description

Provides an in-depth examination of state and local government in Texas within the broader framework of American federalism. Emphasizing Texas-specific political institutions, intergovernmental relationships, and policy processes, the course explores the distribution of powers and responsibilities between the federal, state, and local levels of government. Students will analyze the structure of the Texas Constitution, the separation of powers in Texas, and the state's unique approach to elections, budgeting, and policymaking. Special attention will be given to the Texas Legislature, executive branch, judicial system, and local governments.
