This course provides an introduction to the principles and practices of crime scene investigation, emphasizing the recognition, documentation, and preservation of physical evidence. Students will explore the various types of forensic evidence and their interpretive value in criminal investigations. The course begins with an overview of the roles and objectives of police and crime scene personnel, as well as ethical considerations and scene integrity. Students will learn crime scene processing methodologies, including documentation, photography, sketching, and the use of search patterns. Core skills such as the use of alternative light sources, fingerprint and impression evidence collection, and presumptive blood tests will be covered. The laboratory component provides hands-on experience with essential field techniques and evidence-handling procedures, reinforcing best practices in contamination prevention, safety, and accurate documentation and reporting. The course is designed to build both the theoretical foundation and practical skills needed for effective forensic scene investigation. Prerequisites: BL 1401 & BL 1402 and CH 1401 & CH1402, CR3335 OR permission of the instructor. An additional fee applies to this course.
