Dignity and Philo Human Rights

This course critically examines philosophical efforts to ground the concept of human rights in the notion of human dignity. IT focuses on appraoaches that understand dignity not as an intrinsic, natural, theological, or metaphysical attribute of human beings, but as arising from a particular kind of experience of the other person-an "ethical" experience-, one that can be explored through philosophy, particularly phenomenological analysis. While the broader discourse includes legal, political, and theological sources, the focus of this course will remain primarily philosophical.
