Catalog description

This course introduces students to the literatures of the African diaspora in the Caribbean and the United States. Specifically, the course will focus on major literary periods and themes in African American and Afro-Caribbean literature such as slave narratives, the Harlem Renaissance, protest literature, literature of the Civil Rights movement, Afrofuturism, anticolonialism and postcolonialism, the politics of language, transnationalism, migration and immigrant narratives. Students will also be introduced to multiple genres of creative works, including poetry, fiction, film, essays, and memoirs.
