Catalog description
This course develops the professional English communication skills required for academic, clinical, public, health, community, administrative, and workplace success in healthcare. Students practice communicating clearly and respectfully with patients, families, instructors, supervisors, and interdisciplinary colleagues. Course content includes healthcare and public health terminology, patient-provider communication, health literacy, patient education, professional writing, documentation-style tasks, case discussions, oral presentations, workplace communication, confidentiality, and culturally responsive care. Through realistic scenarios, role plays, written exercises, and presentations, students will learn to explain symptoms, conditions, procedures, prevention, and health information using language appropriate to the audience. Emphasis is placed on patient-centered communication, professional tone, cultural humility, ethical communication, and the practical use of Enlgish in healthcare-related settings.
