Catalog description

This course provides the student with information on current theories in management, leadership, change systems thinking, and innovation and strategies. Disaster response is also included in this course. Students discuss the complexities of working within a system to elicit change and focus on nursing roles such as teaching and leadership. In the course, the student will select an area of interest related to professional nursing to hone leadership skills and plan and deliver a capstone change project utilizing skills from all prior education and theories learned. The change projects will involve working with families, individuals, or groups (such as communities). In this course, students will learn that to become a nurse leader, the nurse starts with clinical and bedside Experience. Students will understand the role of nurses in using leadership skills to coordinate, direct, and support patient care and other healthcare team members. Students will understand the importance of effective communication skills and serve as patient advocates. Students will learn that the primary role of the nurse leader is to serve as a role model to healthcare and team members. Communicating the goals and expectations of each team member effectively is the key. Students will understand the need to know their roles and the roles of the other team members to work together in attaining common organizational goals; they will learn that nursing leadership begins at the bedside; by developing and improving the fundamental leadership skills, bedside nurses can positively impact patient outcomes. To progress to Semesters 2, 3, 4, and 5, the students must complete all the previous courses with a passing grade of 75% and above to progress to the next semester.
