Catalog description

The course discusses the needs of the client with a mental illness or psychiatric issue. It discusses the concepts of therapeutic communication and cultural, ethical, and legal influences. History of mental illness and stigma and the role of professional nursing in the delivery of care in psychiatric/mental health nursing. It provides opportunities for the student to develop a care plan for the adult/older adult client in the psychiatric/ mental health setting. Students utilize medical mental health facilities, substance abuse facilities, and related providers of mental health services facilities. In this course, students will understand psychopathology and mental health across the lifespan Ability to assess cognitive, behavioral, emotional, and interpersonal functioning, and to integrate and synthesize test data with observations, interviews, and other data sources. Learn to conduct psychological and behavioral interventions to improve health and functioning using a wide range of evidence -based interventions of psychological processes. Establish a therapeutic relationship and communication with diverse populations. Learn to recognize and respond to ethical, legal, and regulatory issues about Mental health practice. Understanding of professional expectations that guide behavior promotes self -reflection, integrity, and accountability. Awareness and understanding of how developmental stages and life transitions interconnect with the larger bio -sociocultural framework, how identity evolves as a function of such connections, and how these different socialization and development experiences influence worldview and identity.
