Catalog description

This course emphasizes providing professional nursing care for clients with acute medical and surgical conditions. Selected conditions will be discussed and emphasized. Students will be introduced to advanced concepts related to the nurse's role as a healthcare team member. Emphasis is based on using evidence -based practice and informatics in providing care. Pharmacology for medical-surgical conditions is emphasized. It provides opportunities for the students to deliver nursing care to patients needing acute medical and surgical care in medical facilities and surgical centers for adults and older adults. In this course, students will learn how to care for a medical surgical patient using the nursing process, principles and concepts of Orem’s Theory of Self -Care, critical thinking, and clinical reasoning; students will provide safe, patient-centered, evidence-based therapeutic care of 2 - 3 adult patients with common to complex medical/surgical conditions in the acute care setting with minimal assistance. Nursing practice builds on previous concepts and clinical experiences.
