Students further explore professional nursing practice and apply concepts to adults and older adults experiencing medical-surgical conditions. Evidence-based practice is integrated into the learning experiences to provide the student with current trends in implementing advanced nursing skills and to facilitate the development of clinical reasoning skills. Cultural and psychosocial influences are considered in the care of diverse patient populations. Students practice in nursing homes and healthcare facilities. The primary focus of medical -surgical nursing care is to meet the adult patient's biological, psychosocial, cultural, and spiritual needs in a mutually trusting, respectful, and caring relationship, promoting health and preventing illness or injury in patients aged 18 to over 100. Medical-surgical nurses must have a broad knowledge base to meet the needs of patients in various healthcare settings across the continuum. Nurses care for patients before and after surgical procedures, treat incisions, administer medications, monitor their vital signs and condition, and educate them on how to continue their care at home. During the perioperative phase, the primary focus and importance in nursing care should be reestablishing the patient.
