Fundamentals of Nursing Practice

Catalog description

This course builds upon the concepts in NUR 100. It is designed to assist a beginning student in acquiring a foundation of basic nursing theory, basic nursing skills, and an introduction to the nursing role. Pharmacology and medication administration are introduced. Other topics in the course include safety, the nursing process, holistic care, evidence -based practice, and other theoretical concepts. Students will practice skills such as comfort measures, hygiene, safety, oxygenation, nutrition, elimination, sleep, assistance with daily living activities, positioning, transportation, asepsis and sterile technique, skin & wounds, client assessment, medication administration, vital signs, and other psychomotor skills. Students will complete a gerontological - based clinical experience. Students will learn of the opportunities for explaining, demonstrating, and practicing care provider activities essential to the basic nursing practice. Learning experiences are provided in the skills laboratory. In this course, students will learn all the basic skills needed to assess a patient, perform Vital signs, practice infection control, and learn how to operate basic types of equipment. There are ten weeks of skills learning on campus, and in the next five weeks, students will go to a clinical site to practice the learned skills.
