Catalog description

The course provides the student with a basic understanding of communications processes and how to manage and utilize these processes in effective ways. Students learn the concepts and practices of effective communication through writing and verbal/oral assignments and presentations, reading assignments, case research and critical thinking. The course covers areas including working with and utilizing the various forms of media, particularly social media, the foundation of communications, the role of sport staff members and collegiate and professional sport organizations, the ways in which intrapersonal, interpersonal and small group communications are used in sport and business organizations, and finally how to use communications in advocacy and persuasion. Communication is an important management skill; some say it is the most important management competency.
