Religions of the Black Diaspora

This course is an introduction to the development of Black Diasporic Religions in the Western world: Latin America, the Caribbean and the United States. The course explores the origins of indigenous African Religions prior to dispersion with particular emphasis on the cultural traditions,and practices observed in Slave religion of the antebellum south, and in the various nations of Latin and Caribbean America. Topics include, but arenot limited to: creator deities, religious syncretism, spirit veneration, invisible institution, Vodoun, Sea Islands - and a variety of Black religious experiences that developed in the Western world.
