Catalog description

Existing course description: This course offers an examination of general legal concepts, federal and state legislation, and legal liabilities as they impact the recreation and sport management profession. It is designed to assist administrators and supervisors to anticipate and cope with potential litigation. Proposed course description: This course is designed to provide knowledge and understanding of the legal standards and statutes pertaining to interscholastic and intercollegiate athletics and physical education as well as the duties placed upon athletics administrators, coaches, teachers and other athletics personnel. Topics covered in the course include developing, implementing and managing a risk management plan, negligence, Title IX compliance, gender equity, sexual harassment, employment law, and hazing. The course is conducted in a seminar format. Students explore, offer analysis and discuss possible resolutions to specific dilemmas. In doing so, students gain increased knowledge and a deeper understanding of the role and influence of those involved in the sport experience on the legal and ethical dimensions of sport.
