Interdisciplinary Perspectives on Aging

Interdisciplinary Perspectives on Aging is a course designed to help student view the social, psychological, and physical dimensions of aging through different lenses. This course is for graduate students who are interested in learning more about the process of aging and who may want to consider an aging-related career. In the first half of the semester, students are introduced to the social construction of aging, age and ageism, theoretical perspectives on aging, aging as a demographic phenomenon, and aging as a component of diversity, intersecting with race, gender, disability, and sexual orientation. In the second half of the semester, students are introduced to issues of aging, such as work and retirement, physical aging, health care, mental health, dementia, and social policy. Students also learn about career opportunities in the field of aging.
