Assessing Power and Privilege in Health

This course is designed to introduce students to the principles of program planning for health promotion activities. The purpose of the course is to identify selected health problems affecting specific target groups and suggest possible strategies for alleviating them. Students discuss the historical, social, political, and economic factors that affect the health status of ethnic minorities and other vulnerable groups in the U.S. This course provides a forum to discuss the social, economic, and political factors that impact health, health status and health promotion. Students discuss culturally relevant and sensitive strategies and models to prevent and minimize diseases in disadvantaged communities and analyze policy recommendations that may positively impact the health of such communities. Students who complete this course will be prepared to approach intervention planning and implementation from both theoretical and practical perspectives, with sensitivity to cultural, ethical and social factors within a target population or community, and in society at-large. Upon completion of this course, students will be able to design an effective health promotion intervention that is evidence-based, consistent with established theory, practical, evaluable and inter-professional in scope.
