This course is based on the assumption that the best educators critically consider what to teach, how to teach, and how to assess students and their classes. In other words, the best teachers are equipped with a well-developed and thoughtful intellectual framework that helps them to make sound educational decisions based upon the myriad of factors that influence those decisions. The course prepares students with skills and knowledge necessary to work in the area of school health education at the K-12 level. This course will enable students to construct a framework of ideas, skills, and dispositions that will help them make educational/teaching decisions and empower them to act on those decisions. Students will trace the evolution of curriculum theory in the United from its inception to the present day foci on inclusion, culturally relevant pedagogy, and learning technology. Within this theoretical framing, students are introduced to contemporary research-based practices in teacher education. Basic instructional models such as direct instruction, inquiry learning, information processing approaches, cooperative learning, and teaching with technology will provide the framework for acquiring skills in developing instruction to meet the needs of an increasingly diverse student population, including learners with disabilities and English language learners.
