Exploring Wellness Through Hip-hop

This course focuses on the movement aspect of hip hop culture, supported by discussion and journal assignments. From the old school style to commercial hip hop, students explore a wide range of hip- hop vocabulary within group choreography, footwork, and floor work. Class incorporates funk, street, b-boy/b-girl, and elements to stretch and tone the body. Class includes across the floor and center combinations, building students’ relationship to musicality, athleticism, dynamics, and the isolation and articulation of various body parts. This course uses hip-hop as a lens to discuss physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual wellness through movement, emphasizing its historical, social, and cultural roots. No previous dance experience necessary.
