Catalog description

This state-approved Nursing Assistant training course prepares students to perform simple and basic nursing functions utilized in avariety of health care settings under the supervision of anurse. Instruction includes hands-on experience in the classroom, lab and clinical settings. Skills taught include the 21 IDPH required skills as well as all elements of personal care, proper body mechanics, safety measures including cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), vital signs, resident rights, infection control, communication and observation. Students will also learn basic anatomy & physiology as well as medical terminology. Following successful completion of the course, astudent must pass awritten state competency examination to work as acertified nurse assistant (CNA). NOTE: T omeet the Illinois Department of Public Health’srequirements, students must be 16 years of age and pass acriminal background check to participate in this course which is offered in either accelerated (six weeks), summer (eight weeks) or extended (16 weeks) time frame. Students will be dropped from the course if they fail to pass the criminal background check, meet IDPH course attendance requirements, or fail to meet clinical facility requirements. Students must have completed, at aminimum, eight years of grade school or provide proof of equivalent knowledge; be in good physical and emotional health; and have good interpersonal communication skills.
