Introduction to Special Education

Catalog description

This is asurvey course that presents the historical, philosophical and legal foundations of special education, focusing on implementing evidence-based strategies to support children from birth through Grade 12 in avariety of settings with exceptional cognitive, social, physical, and emotional needs. The course examines the diversity of individuals with disabilities, the impact of disabling conditions in learning environments, and relevant state and federal laws such as the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), and Individualized Family Service Plans (IFSPs). Additionally, it explores the collaborative roles of educators, families, and communities in fostering supportive educational environments for students with special needs. This course fulfills the requirements of School Code 25.25.
