Appellate Advocacy I

Catalog description

Appellate practice focusing on the appellate jurisdiction of appellate courts and courts of review. Students will write an appellate brief and may have to present some information orally. Students will be assigned an appellate record and will be required to develop assignments of error and conduct legal research regarding appellate jurisdiction, standards of review, the Uniform Rules of the Courts of Appeal and the substantive and procedural law issues raised by the assignments of error. Students are afforded extensive opportunities to complete draft writing products prior to submission of the final brief. They confer individually with their professor for assessments of their written work. They edit and rewrite their appellate briefs and receive consistent feedback at each stage. This course may satisfy the requirement that a student take Advanced Legal Analysis & Writing to graduate. Legal Analysis & Writing I and II are the only prerequisites for this course.
