This course examines the major themes in the development of Chinese, Korean, and Japanese societies from the late 18th century to the present. Topics include the growth of the Confucian state in China; the role of 19th century crises and the Communist revolution in transforming the state's goals and capacities; the fragmentation and reorientation of the Chinese elite; peasant rebellion and the revolution of 1949; protest and resistance to traditional and modern regimes; the influence of Western contact on the restructuring of Japan; industrialization; political modernization and imperialism in Japan; the recovery of post-war Japan; and economic dominance in the late 20th century.
