INTRODUCTION TO AFRICAN AMERICAN STUDIES

Course examines the African American experience, focusing on the social, cultural, political, and historical contributions of Black people in the United States. Students explore the intersections of race, class, gender, and sexuality, examining how these identities have shaped the lived experiences of African Americans. Central to this course are themes of Blackness, resistance, agency, and social justice, as students critically engage with concepts such as racial formation, the institution of slavery, systemic racism, colonialism, intersectionality, and the cultural expressions of African Americans. By the end of this course, students will be able to analyze contemporary racial issues and recognize their historical roots.
