Catalog description
This course provides students with advanced laboratory skills needed for employment in the biotechnology industry. Students will be re-introduced to the basic concepts of molecular biology including DNA structure and function as well as the process and controls of gene expression. Techniques include DNA isolation, purification and sequencing, gel electrophoresis, fluorescence in situ hybridization and Southern Blot analysis, DNA restriction/fingerprinting, cloning (transformation and screening) and real-time PCR. Maintenance of an industry standard notebook, application of SOP and instrument maintenance and care emphasized. Students will also be introduced to the field of bioinformatics.
