Catalog description
This course surveys the history of childhood in the United States from the early colonial period to the recent past. It examines both the lived experiences of children of different backgrounds and social identities, across race, ethnicity, class, gender, culture, and geography, as well as the changing constructions of childhood imposed by adults. Students will learn how the nature of childhood changed over time, giving rise to a more child-centered culture and institutions.
