Imperialism, Then and Now

The course seeks to understand formal and informal imperialism as a distinct, singular process, which has played a central role in world economy since 1500. The course will analyze gender, ethnic, racial and class inequality at the local, state and global level. Contemporary implications of imperialism will be discussed, especially in the context of economic development and democratization prospects in the Global South. Spanish, Dutch, British, Ottoman and Russian Empires will be covered. Cross-Listed: POLS 381 .
