Infant and Child Cognition

Catalog description

This course examines theories and research in cognitive development with an emphasis on infancy and early childhood. Piagetian, Vygotskian, Information-processing, and Dynamic Systems Approaches are explored while examining the development of processes including attention, perception, memory, language, and reasoning. In addition to learning about theories and research findings in the field, students will (1) become familiar with the research methods employed by psychologists to study cognitive development; (2) think critically about current cognitive developmental questions; and (3) apply cognitive developmental findings to real world contexts. Students with a semester level of Freshman 1, Freshman 2 or Sophomore 1 may not enroll.
