Women and Music

Catalog description

Explores the musical contributions of women, a group often excluded from studies of music history, from the Middle Ages to the present. Emphasis will be placed on the changing roles of and attitudes towards women as composers, performers, teachers, writers, patrons, and instrument-builders. Focus will be on the music itself, as well as reception history and historical and sociological context. There will also be discussion on the role of gender in shaping musical ideology and experiences. Thematic Thread(s): Cultural Literacy & Community Building, Human Diversity & Well-Being, Transfer Thread Completion Course Students with a semester level of Freshman 1, Freshman 2 or Sophomore 1 may not enroll.
