Social Determinants of Health

Catalog description

This course focuses on the systematic study of the social and economic conditions in the environments where people are born, live, learn, work, play, worship, and age that affect a wide range of health, functioning, and quality-of-life outcomes and risks. Students will specifically explore how social influences, such as income, social capital, race, gender, education, employment, housing, neighborhood, food security, healthcare, environment, and life course affect health status, disease, disability, and longevity. Students will also examine the role of public policy and structural interventions in shaping health outcomes for communities. Students with a semester level of Freshman 1, Freshman 2 or Sophomore 1 may not enroll.
