Catalog description
This course surveys the development of Western art music from the mid-18th century to the present, emphasizing the Classical, Romantic, Modern, and Contemporary eras. Through listening, score study, readings, and discussion, students will explore the evolution of musical style, form, and aesthetics alongside the social, cultural, and technological contexts that shaped them. In addition to traditional historical study, students will examine music’s intersections with performance practice, pedagogy, and contemporary creative expression.
