Catalog description

This course will address the historiography of genocide and the difficulties in defining the terms “genocide” and “massacre” and then consider the historical-political contexts of select genocides and cases of massacre, both through readings (books, articles, and primary sources) and watching and analyzing historical films, from the eighteenth century to the present. Students will consider the regional and international challenges involved in trying to prevent potential genocide and stop genocides already occurring.
