Explores how Spain interprets its history through literature, film, and visual culture. In 2000, Spain exhumed a mass grave from the Spanish Civil War for the first time, marking the nation’s entry into the 21st century while looking back at its past. We will examine the “memory boom” of the early 2000s, focused on the Civil War and postwar period, as well as works that address Spain’s colonial legacy and transition to democracy. By analyzing historical and collective memory, students will consider how the ghosts of the past continue to shape contemporary Spain and the ways in which the country defines itself through remembrance.
