- Black America Becoming: An Empirical Analysis of Social Change in Black America

Catalog description

A survey of 20th century sociological research on Black communities to inform original analysis of African-American experiences and community dynamics in the contemporary U.S. Special attention will be paid to the scholarship and research program of W.E.B. Du Bois. Students will be instructed in basic statistical techniques to gauge changing patterns of segregation, education, occupation, incarceration, family formation, and general well-being among Black Americans through the 20th and 21st centuries. Students will be required to develop sociologically informed presentations suitable to deliver to campus and community audiences during Black History Month.
