- Schools: The Problem or the Solution?

Catalog description

To what extent do schools function as a “great equalizer” in American society? Students will read foundational and contemporary texts in the sociology of education to analyze whether schools function as engines of opportunity or institutions of social reproduction. Topics include school funding, segregation, and discipline; the relationships between schools and families; and student experiences in higher education. Students will connect sociological theory to contemporary debates about education in America and apply this knowledge through a community-engaged project.
