Catalog description

Introduces students to research-based pedagogies and instructional design for teaching computer science and digital literacy in middle school settings. Emphasizing inquiry-based learning, project-based learning, and culturally responsive teaching, the course supports students in applying their STEM content knowledge to develop, deliver, and reflect on lessons aligned with the New York State Computer Science and Digital Literacy Standards. Through a combination of curriculum development, peer feedback, and supervised teaching, students gain hands-on experience teaching computer science in a local middle school and explore how to engage learners through equitable and developmentally appropriate instructional strategies. Students will teach their computer science lessons outside of class meeting time (1 lead teaching experience, and at least two other instances for a total of 3 hours) and will work with the instructor to schedule available times.
