Catalog description

An exploration of a variety of children’s literature genres, authors, and illustrators with an emphasis on selection criteria for literature-based programs in the elementary classroom. Students will explore children’s literature awards and resources for choosing multicultural and anti-bias children’s literature to represent a wide range of children’s social identities and experiences. Students will read children’s (PK-12) literature that addresses topics related to race, ethnicity, language, culture, immigration experiences, gender and sexualities, disabilities, and social justice. By examining trends in censorship, book banning, and curricular changes, students will also critically reflect on how various stakeholders (e.g., publishers, school administrators, elected officials, teachers, parents, and children) hold power over what children have access to read.
